On Commenting Part 2

Wow, you guys, thanks so much for commenting about comments yesterday. I think the general consensus is -- there's not enough time in the day to comment. So thanks for stopping by and letting me know that.

And now, there's just one other thing I wanted to bring up about my commenting and I thought it deserved its own post.

Your blog's appearance.

Now I know you all work hard to maintain your sidebars and have groovy widgets and pages and all kinds of pictures and some of you even have music. They're awesome to behold. Only I can't behold them. I get stuck.

Stuck, you ask? Yes, stuck. There are several people who I used to follow faithfully, but then they changed their template and for some reason, every time I visit them now, I get stuck. My internet won't close, I can't get out of their blog, I can't go anywhere in their blog, I can't move my cursor, I'm stuck. Sometimes I even crash. And let me tell you, that is scary to me. My life is on this computer.

I'm not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to technology but I have figured that sometimes I have to let the little box on the bottom of my screen say "done" before I can go anywhere on any given blog.

I've done that when I know I'm going somewhere I think I'll get stuck. It doesn't help.

I've tried going to these particular blogs through Google Reader. Still get stuck.

I think (and this is only my non-technological brain thinking here) it may be because they have so many gadgety-widgety things and my internet access is only a step up from dial-up my internet can't keep up. But I don't know.

So, Hannah (especially Hannah) Courtney Barr, Elle Strauss (yes, you too Elle), Jessica, Julie, Hillary, and now Laurel, (I just tried it this morning) that's why you haven't seen me. It's not that I don't want to comment, I just can't. I get stuck. (And if you see any of these women, please tell them what I said. I can't even get to their sight to grab their email addresses.)

Does anyone else have this problem or it is just me?

I haven't had a problem with getting stuck yet. But some are def. slower to load. I end up staying away if a site takes too long to load. That must be frustrating. I'll let a couple of them know!

Is that Jessica referring to me? I hardly have any gadgets on my at all. It's actually quite free of gadgets ..

Yes, some take longer to load. I've learned on a couple blogs to simply wait 30 seconds after posting my comment before closing the screen, or it locks up my computer, too.
I know I have a lot of gadgets, so hopefully my blog isn't a big problem.

I don't get stuck, but there are some that take forever to load. Even the 'done' does not mean it is truly done. It often means it is done with one part of what it is doing, but then it goes on to activate more stuff (I'm not saying this is what is happening to you, though!).

Hi Anne!!! Are you blogging as part of Elana, Alex & I's blog trifecta??? Because you're doing a great job! I spoke of commenting today as well!!!

I'm with you on those super gadgets on blog, music playlists, super awards, the more things piled on the harder it is to reach them. I have certain people that I have to reach on my laptop, and even then I get frustrated after waiting 10 minutes to load. I try and make mine as easy to access as possible, constantly trying to access it myself to see if it makes a difference!!

I have a great connection here at work, so I almost never lock up, but just a suggestion you could try using Firefox and installing some add ons like script blockers and so forth. I will say this though: If a blog is too visually busy or has too much stimulus I will rarely take the time to read and comment. I visit too many blogs every day to risk the headache.

I've never had this problem before, but that does seem like something that could happen to a few pages I've seen here on the interwebs.

I haven't gotten stuck, but there are blogs that t...a...k...e a looooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg time to load. I'll try 'em a couple of times, but I don't bother after that.

Thanks guys, it makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only one who has this problem.

Sometimes it takes a long time for me to load some peoples pages, and in truth that makes me less likely to want to go there- even if i normally like their material. Good post.

Sorry, Anne, to have made my blog harder to access. I was just incredibly tired of the old layout. And I also removed a lot of the clutter from the sidear, so there a far fewer widgets to load. Though there is more art, and that may be the issue. :-(

It's possible that you are overdue for some software updates such as java reader. Maybe another reader has a brilliant insight to help you?

Please don't be sorry for those of you who changed your lay-out, that's what blogging is, a creative outlet. I can still read you on Goodle Reader, I just can't comment. Once I get my life under control again, (which means when I have more time) I'll try to access the blogs and snag an email address so I can email you. It's all good.

I don't like visiting those blogs either. It doesn't freeze me up, but it does take a smidgen longer to load, and I'm very impatient. I cut down all the extra stuff on my blog a while back: just a blogroll, followers widget, and my WIP stat counter. Hopefully if there was ever a problem with mine, that solved it.

i do indeed. What i do with blogs like that, is i let it load while i look at another blog. Then when i'm done with that blog, the first one is usually up and ready to go.
This is why i don't have to many zazzy things on my blog

I get stuck sometimes too and have to leave the blog. I'd like to leave a comment, but time is short and I can't be waiting two minutes at a site. Not sure why the reason for the delays, but it does happen.

Oh no! I just changed mine yesterday; hope it still works!
Ah, dial-up... :/

Oh, I have all sorts of problems, but they usually work themselves out...either I figure out the solution or just ignore the thing. :)

Wow, I should check out my blog. Perhaps it's a pain for everyone! Thanks for this post.

Hi Anne. This happens to me too. Some blogs simply crash my computer - and yes, that scares me too, for the same reason! I have a good internet connection but a very old computer with fading memory, and it really doesn't like any blog that has too many widgets and gadgets flying about. It's sad as I know there are some fab blogs out there with great posts, but I can never get to them without all hell breaking loose.

This happens to me! I thought it was just my computer! There are a few blogs that keep freezing my computer.

Ann,
I didn't get a chance to comment on your blog post yesterday, but I think your conclusion just about sums it up. There's just not enough time in the day.

As for getting struck, well yeah, I'm having this problem with a couple of blogs. I had to give up going to a few altogether because of it.

Alex, actually, your blog freezes my computer up..lol, but I wait a bit and it eventually unfreezes.

Terry Towery said...

Whew. I'm surprised you didn't mention me. Several people have had trouble reading and commenting on mine. I've changed it so many times that I'm always surprised when I go to it. It almost seems like someone else's. :)

Anyway, I agree with the person above who mentioned updating your Java script. It can't hurt.

you are so right. if i have technical issues at a blog, as someone who gets frustrated easily, i scram. i have to. i struggle so much with the technical side of stuff that i can't get bogged down.

Google Alert alerted me, Anne! I had no idea that people might be having trouble loading my site. Sorry to hear you can't comment, but I'm happy to hear you're still visiting!

I believe you have something there...that happens to me, too. Also, on just 'regular' blogs, blogger hangs up, gives me some error code, posts a comment twice...I have to wonder sometimes if a lot of it is Blogger!!!

Unknown said...

Anne, I cleaned up my blog based on the comments I've read here. Let me know if it works better for you.

Thanks,
Elle

Yes, I've had that problem! Simple format is easiest. I do like a good layout, and a creative header, but more importantly I love to READ the post. And usually that is not what makes a blog 'stuck.' Please let me know if this ever happens on mine!

Unknown said...

Now I understand. I thought it was my computer... why else would I keep getting glitches ;)

I have never had a problem over here.

Shalet Jimmy said...

When I don't have anything, I am still in the habit of changing my templates. I 'll be careful . I am also not too aware of the technicalities.

Lola Sharp said...

Oh no...I always have photos in my posts...sometimes a lot of photos.

Does that make it hard to visit me/slow to load? (please let me know.)

I have a mac, and cable internet...so I never have problems loading on anyone's blogs/sites.

BUT, Blogger has been buggy on me the last few days. Grrr.

Anonymous said...

I've run into that, too. I think Blogger has some more clitches to work out; it's not always the internet access. If I go two visits on Blogger without a bug showing up, it's a good week.

My pet peeve is when people make it impossible to find their pages! So please, please, those of you who this applies to, make sure your link is visible when I click on your picture in the followers list. There are three people today who I couldn't get to, and I'll have to wait till they comment on my blog, since that's an easier and immediate pathway. Thanks for opening up discussion on this topic--it's a good heads up for everyone (and for myself, too).
